Nothing- and I cannot stress this enough- prepared me for my terrible teenage skin. I used to have clear skin that was the envy of everyone. My friends who had acne would always remind me of how lucky I was that I wasn’t going through all that with them. Then I woke up one day a couple of weeks to my 17th birthday and I couldn’t recognize my face anymore. Sadly I didnt receive much in the form of skincare routine and advice for teens.
Then Came the Advice
Suddenly every one decided to chime in. I got a lot of advise from adults on how to banish my acne. These advise ranged from the good, to the bad, to the ugly, to the downright bizarre. I was asked to do tomato masks,, Lemon plus baking soda masks, spot-treat with toothpaste. An aunt told me to cleanse my face every morning with morning pee and another aunt told me the sure secret to clear skin was to use the very first period to smear your face and rinse off. The funny thing is that that aunt still has clear skin to this day
so we may never know.
There were days when I hid out in my room and cried till I slept. My teenage acne-ridden skin dealt a huge hit on my self esteem. And so I discovered scrubs. I purchased a Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash and it’s accompanying scrub and set to work to clear my skin. It cleared my acne alright but I ended damaging my skin even worse. I would soon discover that your skin can be acne-free and still be bad and damaged.
It Gets Worse
My oil production was out of control. I had bad texture and lots of hyperpigmentation. My moisture barrier was seriously damaged. I soon started wishing I left my acne alone. Lord knows I already had plenty to deal with as a teenager without adding problem skin into the mix.
But now I know better after years of trial and error and endless research on skincare. If there was a way to talk to my younger self there’s a lot I have to say. Hopefully this might also be helpful to a teenager who is completely overwhelmed with skin problems. If you’re a teenager or if you have a teenager at home, mama is here to help.
Skincare Advice for Teens
- Be calm. Stop worrying yourself acne is normal and expected. Also, acne can only be controlled by the help of a well rounded skincare routine. Which leads me to the next point.
- Stop harming your skin further. Now is a good time to throw away thestripping cleansers, the walnut scrubs, the baking soda. Stop putting lemon on your face. Seriously, stop! It’s making everything worse.
- Create a healthy skincare routine. A well-balanced skincare routine for teens should have at the very least a Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer and Sunscreen.
- Exfoliate Weekly
- Drink lots of water
