Unless you live under a rock you have heard of The Ordinary Skincare Brand which is a division of Deciem. Because no further introduction is necessary about this brand I’ll go ahead and narrate my experience. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution was one of those products I saw everywhere but never gave much thought. While most people swore by it others were meh. I usually don’t care for AHAs due to my oily, acne-prone, and blemished skin. I’m more of a BHA girl. Cosrx BHA Blackhead liquid is holy grail to me. My experience with the Cosrx AHA 7 gave me pause but this one has a different pH so i thought why the hell not. So it was a little out of the ordinary for me to even be interested in glycolic acid again. So I placed an order and received it in no time at all.
Unlike most of The Ordinary products which are 30ml, this one is a whooping 240ml. I wasn’t too surprised about it given that they claim it is a toning solution. It comes in a transparent plastic bottle with both a screw-on and an applicator if that’s more convenient for you. I found it easier to apply with the applicator. The product inside is a clear liquid with a yellowish tint and is thin and watery.

I never checked out the ingredients in this one till now but its surprising seeing that it has so many. Most of the other products from The Ordinary have minimal ingredients.
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution Product Claims
Glycolic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 7% toning solution offers mild exfoliation for improved skin radiance and visible clarity. The formula also improves the appearance of skin texture with continued use.
This formula contains a studied Tasmanian Pepperberry derivative to help reduce irritation associated with acid use. This derivative is of plant origin and varies in colour seasonally and this colour variation may be apparent in the formula from time to time. The formula is further supported with inclusion of ginseng root and aloe vera for both visible radiance and soothing benefits.
My Experience with The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
I tried not to have too many expectations of this because it’s The Ordinary and they usually keep it simple. I thought the consistency and smell was good enough. The price was also great for the size of the product. However I had a problem with the directions on the bottle which says it’s okay to use once a day. Absolutely do not use this everyday. Only do so if you want to wreck your barrier. You can get away with using every other day if you’re lucky.
Unfortunately I didn’t know just how potent 7% glycolic acid could be and dove right in. Ended up with a messed up lipid barrier. I had to stop use for a few weeks to get my skin to bounce back before I started again and it still didn’t go well. Everything finally clicked when I used Cosrx AHA 7 and The Ordinary Peeling Solution. There was something about AHAs that didn’t quite agree with my skin. I had to convert this to deodorant for my underarm for it not to go to waste.
While this didn’t work for my face, it did wonders for my armpit hyperpigmentation so I’m not too mad. Patch-testing this for a few weeks before use might do you a whole lot of good than it did me. I dove straight in and paid the price dearly. Always patch-test guys.
Also, don’t be foolish like me by using this everyday. You absolutely don’t need to exfoliate everyday. Even though it says “toning solution”, this not a toner. At least not in the true sense of the word so. It’s more of an exfoliating liquid than a toner and I wish that was more clearly stated. I shudder to think of the number of people who have destroyed their skin using this as toner everyday.
This is a bargain for the price and I’m sure the people who can tolerate it would love it.
