If you’ve made the conscious choice to step away from chemical sunscreens for one reason or the other then this is for you. Mineral sunscreens are perfect for sensitive skin and sensitive people because they are gentle on skin and gentle on the coral reefs. These mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin cut out most of your excuses for not wearing sunscreens. They are not heavy on skin and they don’t sting.
Due to being ever so gentle, mineral sunscreens are best for sensitive skin that is prone to irritation. Mineral sunscreens also protect against HEV light (High Energy Visible) or blue light. Blue light has been shown to deeply penetrate the skin causing premature aging and worsening fine lines.
The only downside to mineral sunscreen is that it leaves a white cast on darker skin. Although that is unlikely to deter you if you’re reading this. However, some brands now make better physical sunscreens with the use of micronized technology. My list of best mineral sunscreens leave little to no white cast at all.
Mineral Sunscreens for Sensitive Skin
Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30
This Drunk Elephant’s physical sunscreen contains a powerful blend of sun screening filters and antioxidants that delivers powerful UVA and UVB protection. It also has a tint to leave you glowy and without greasiness so you can be sure there’s minimal white cast. It also contains grape juice and sunflower shoot extracts to minimize photoaging. Also infused with raspberry and marula oils for extra hydration.
Supergoop Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion
This pink-hued SPF 40 sunscreen is a lightweight non-nano zinc oxide lotion that provides daily protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays. What puts this on my list for best mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin is its pink tint. It pink hue blends in translucent on most skin tones and works especially good for sensitive, oily acne-prone skin. It’s ingredients list features clean ingredients like winter cherry, coconut fruit extract, and blueberry extract to help nourish and shield the skin from external aggressors.
Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish
This was one of the sunscreen I used when I started using tretinoin. And I only stopped using it cos it made me pale af. I looked like I hadn’t seen the sun in ages and that’s how I knew it was working. I had to stop using it because I got tired of being asked why I was so pale. Due to its white cast and superior UVA filters. Being a Korean beauty product you can be sure it’s full of mostly clean ingredients and that is never a bad thing. It contains centella asiatica and aloe leaf juice to calm the most sensitive skin. As a person of color, this sunscreen was better than most when it comes to white cast too.
Purito Comfy Water Sun Block
Purito makes some of the best sunscreens for all skin types if we’re keeping it 100. I’d give a left arm for their centella unscented. This one is almost the same too except for the filters. While the centella unscented one is a chemical sunscreen, this one is purely mineral. Can be used on sensitive skin and also perfect for children. Contains 70% water so when I tell you this felt like water it’s not a lie. It contains four forms of centella asiatica so you know it’s very soothing.
EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46
Again, on paper, this sunscreen is perfect. 5% Niacinamide. Lactic Acid. High Purity Zinc Oxide. But I don’t care for any sunscreen I will spend 5 whole minutes rubbing in just so I don’t look like Casper the Friendly Ghost. Touted as one of the best mineral sunscreens and it is because every white person with sensitive skin swears by it. I just wish the folks at EltaMD would listen and give us this exact formula but with a tint so the rest of us don’t have to spend the whole day blending it in.
Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen
You can always trust Biossance for superior formulas for sensitive skin and this super sheer, super safe, 100% non-nano, non-toxic zinc SPF does not disappoint. Protects and hydrates the most sensitive skin without any white cast. I first used this sunscreen after getting it as a sample with my biossance squalane moisturizer and was pleasantly surprised that a physical sunscreen was that good. It left a soft dewy finish that I especially enjoyed. The only downside is that it is only SPF 30 which means you have to always reapply and mostly stay out of the sun.
