Basic Skincare Routine for Beginners

Getting into skincare can be discouraging. It a bit like getting into makeup. There are so many products and so many steps. Cleansers, Toners, Essences, Ampoules, Serums, Pressed serums… All the steps and products involved is enough to overwhelm any beginner. Putting together a skincare routine for beginners and as a beginner doesn’t have to involve all that.

Everyone has different skin types and concerns and issues but there are still certain skincare rules that apply to everyone. This basic skincare routine for beginners involve just three steps and can be amended and modified as you go.

Cleanse

Everyone should be cleansing twice a day- in the morning and at night before bed. You cleanse in the morning to get rid of sweat, oil, and occlusive (if used the previous night) left over from the previous night. Morning cleansing is especially beneficial for oily skin. My dry skin babes can get away with just rinsing with plain water to because using a cleanser twice in a day can be too stripping and damaging to skin’s barrier.

Cleansing at night is non-negotiable. Through the course of our daily activities, we come in contact with pollution, dirt, and grime which mixes up with the products on the face, sunscreen, and dead skin cells. All these settle on the surface of the skin and when not removed at the end of the day, absolutely damage the skin.

Cleansers should be gentle and not stripping. They should also contain beneficial hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Good cleansers contain minimal ingredients and no fragrances, alcohol or essential oils, so as not to irritate the skin.

Moisturize

Some other steps come between cleansing and moisturizing but because we are focused on just beginner those other steps are inconsequential for now. After cleansing, you can always go straight to moisturizing. Moisturizing should be done twice a day. Moisturizers should be tailored to skin types. Oil-free and lightweight formulas are perfect for oily skin. Fragrance-free formulas are perfect for sensitive skin. While people with dry skin will love richer, heavier, and oilier formulas because they need some extra moisture and hydration.

Moisturizers can also be used to address specific skin concerns. To achieve this, you can always go for moisturizers with special ingredients that target specific skin concerns. You can seek out moisturizers with hyaluronic acid and glycerin to address oily and dehydrated skin. Acne sufferers can go look out for retinoic acid and salicylic acid on the product labels. Vitamin C and niacinamide are the ingredients to look for if you need a little brightening. Ceramides for barrier repair and antioxidants for everybody.

Protect

Sunscreen. There’s not much to say here. This last step is only done in the morning. If you have to do just one step let it be sunscreen. Sunscreen is your skin’s defense against the dark arts that is UV radiation. UV radiation attacks your skin and destroys it even causing cancer sometimes. Sunscreen is needed regardless what skin problem or issues you are seeking to address.
